Twenty-two states have received grants to participate in a study of privacy and security concerns associated with the proposed national health information network. Research Triangle Institute (RTI)-one of the organizations managing the study-thehas offered the grants to twelve others.
RTI is partnering with The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices to examine business policies and state laws related to the privacy and security of health information. The studies seek to identify differences in state security and privacy laws and best practices, and develop solutions to these variations.
"Current policies and laws governing the security and privacy of health care information vary considerably nationwide," said Linda Dimitropoulos, RTI's project director, in a press release.
State assessments of these laws and policies are due in fall 2006. The project is scheduled to be completed by March 2007.
