The formation of a privacy and security subcommittee was among 28 recommendations unanimously approved by the American Health Information Community (AHIC) on May 16. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt will consider AHIC's proposals.

In addition to the HIPAA-oriented subcommittee, AHIC advised that

  • the Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) identify and define standards that will enable secure messaging between patients and clinicians and make electronic registration information available
  • the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology incorporate HITSP standards as criteria for product certification, to ensure interoperability
