Des Moines, IA-based Wells Fargo Home Mortgage announced May 5 that a computer in the possession of a "global express shipping company" had gone missing in transit to a Wells Fargo facility and may have been stolen.

The computer contained customer information, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and mortgage loan account numbers. Although the computer has two layers of security, the mortgage company stated that it is notifying affected customers.

Police determined that the theft aimed to procure the computer hardware, not the information. Wells Fargo will offer credit monitoring services to affected individuals for one year, continuing the trend of companies offering the services after experiencing security incidents that lead to data loss.
