More than 43,000 Hawaiians are at risk for identity theft after unauthorized users made copies of insurance records, The Associated Press (AP) reports. The records list the names and Social Security numbers of life insurance enrollees from 1999. Most are government employees.

A Honolulu-based professional copying service made authorized copies of the records for use in a lawsuit that the state brought against the several employee associations and unions.

Police later found the records stored on a computer owned by a suspect in an unrelated case. They believe that the breach occurred while the copying service possessed the records, according to the AP.
