David Brailer, the national coordinator for health information technology (IT), announced that he will step down from the post on May 19.
"Over the past two years, David has made significant progress in advancing the president's health IT agenda and laying the building blocks for future progress," HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt said in a statement. "It is with regret that I have accepted Dr. Brailer's resignation." Leavitt did not announce a replacement.
Brailer will serve as vice chairman of the American Health Information Community and as an HHS consultant. He cited family reasons in stepping down from his current job, reports Government Health IT. Brailer lives in California and commutes weekly to Washington, DC.
