Consumers think privacy and security are the top obstacles to healthcare providers establishing electronic health records (EHRs), with 44% ranking them as the number one challenge, according to a recent survey by IDC's Health Industry Insights. Twenty-four percent of respondents cited complexity and cooperation within the healthcare industry as their top concern.
A majority of respondents (70%) were unaware of the government initiative to provide EHRs to all citizens by 2014. They were also skeptical of such efforts, with 86% somewhat or very concerned about the healthcare industry's ability to ensure PHI privacy during the EHR transition.
Consumers are both unaware of the industry's EHR efforts and worried about their privacy, said Marc Holland, author of the survey report, in a recent release. To combat this, he advised providers, payers, vendors, and the government to show that they are making progress in addressing privacy concerns. Health Industry Insights conducted the survey of 1,095 consumers in late 2005.
