One-fifth of healthcare providers remain non-compliant with privacy rule standards, according to a recent study sponsored by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and Phoenix Health Systems.
The January survey of 261 provider and 63 payer organizations shows that although security has supplanted privacy as a major concern, a core group of organizations continues to tread water on privacy.
According to Phoenix Health System's Executive Overview, other survey findings include the following:
- 55% of providers claim to be compliant with the security rule, up from 43% in the summer of 2005
- 24% of providers experienced at least one security incident in the past six months
- Although 84% of providers said they were compliant with the transactions and code sets rule, only 46% say they are conducting all the necessary standard transactions
