US-based Prudential Financial agreed to buy a Canadian toll-free fax number after faxes containing patient information intended for Prudential's insurance division arrived at an herbal remedy company due to misdialing, reports The Canadian Press.
Physician office staff faxed information that included Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, and addresses to North Regent Rx, a distribution company north of Winnipeg in Canada. North Regent's fax number is similar to Prudential's. The herbal distribution company has received the faxes for the past 15 months, according to The Canadian Press.
North Regent employees say they contacted Prudential several times about buying the fax number. After news reports of the misdirected faxes, Prudential responded and bought the number.
