Advances in medical research are inhibited by bureaucratic and unnecessary privacy restrictions, according to a recent report by the United Kingdom-based Academy of Medical Sciences. The study was launched in October 2004 to examine the use of patient data in medical research.
Although the report focuses on medical advances in Great Britain-noting that the country is poised to make contributions to future medical innovation-the topic is familiar to American researchers as well.
"It is crucial that measures to preserve confidentiality and ensure appropriate consent adapt rapidly and in ways that allow research to proceed effectively," the report's summary concludes.
