Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) that oversee state-funded Medicaid plans must allow the public to see some documents, according to the Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission.
On Wednesday, the commission ruled that four HMOs-Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut, Community Health Network of Connecticut Inc., Health Net of Connecticut Inc., and WellCare of Connecticut Inc.-are subject to the state's Freedom of Information Act because they perform a governmental function.
Some said the ruling was significant because it gives the public access to Medicare performance and HMO business information, reports The Hartford Courant. The ruling could set a precedent that applies to other state contractors.
