The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is pushing for emergency approval of bulk enumeration of national provider identifiers (NPIs), Health Data Management reports.

Currently, providers obtain NPIs on an individual basis by submitting a paper or Web-based application. CMS asked the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to approve a bulk NPI application that would allow organizations to request NPIs for multiple providers. CMS asked the OMB to speed approval of the request.

"We cannot reasonably comply with the normal clearance procedures because public harm will ensue from the continued denial of access from providers obtaining [NPIs] en masse," CMS stated in its notice to OMB.
