One of the three major credit reporting companies in the nation, TransUnion, LLC, reported the recent theft of a computer containing the Social Security numbers of 3,600 people. The theft occurred in early October at a California office, Computerworld reports.

TransUnion notified the affected consumers on October 21. The company is tracking the lost data for fraud. Information on the computer may also make it possible for thieves to access other databases and procure more information.

The TransUnion breach joins a series of security breach cases nationwide involving companies such as ChoicePoint Inc., Bank of America Corp., DSW Inc., Reed Elsevier Inc.'s LexisNexis unit, Card Systems Inc. and several universities, reports Computerworld. The breaches have pushed Congress to consider a several new laws, including one that would override state laws in requiring companies to notify consumers when information is stolen and there is a "significant risk" of fraud.
