Survey: Half of companies lack security procedures

There are significant gaps in corporate data security, including a startling lack of security policies, according to a recent survey from Framingham, MA-based GlassHouse Technologies.
The 2005 Data Storage Security Survey surveyed approximately 300 companies in industries such as telecommunications, technology, energy, financial services, aerospace, and healthcare. It found that
- 54% do not have procedures for protecting data
- 70% of the companies' executives said their companies' security was fair or poor
- 85% do not encrypt backup data
- 61% believe external threats trump internal threats to data security
