In an October 25 report, the Commission on Systemic Interoperability (CSI) urged the federal government to develop a standard for patient identification that protects individual information and provide financial incentives to encourage the adoption of health information technology.

"It is within our power to ensure that all Americans get the healthcare they need," CSI Chairman Scott Wallace said in a press release. "This report gives concrete direction on how to connect people to their caregivers and to their health information using computers rather than paper. By optimizing these technologies, we can give Americans the best healthcare possible."

The commission outlined 14 steps for creating such a system, including:

  • adoption incentives
  • regulatory reform
  • public awareness
  • product certification
  • data standards
