The Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) awarded three contracts to public and private groups to speed the adoption of health information technology (IT).
The contracts, totaling $17.5 million, were awarded to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT), and the Health Information Security and Privacy Collaboration (HISPC), according to an October 6 press release. Each organization will work on one aspect of health IT, including interoperability, compliance certification, and privacy and security policies.
"These partnerships represent fundamental steps toward achieving the President's goal of widespread use of electronic health records," HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt said. "Given what we recently experienced with Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the need for portable patient information that can follow the patient has never been more important."
