The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) extended the expiration date for HIPAA's interim enforcement rule to March 16, 2006 on September 14.

The six-month extension comes after HHS published a notice of proposed rulemaking for the final rule in April and asked for public comments until June 17. But don't expect to wait the full six months for the final rule. HHS expects to issue the final rule as soon as possible, and said that it was seeking the six-month extension just in case unforeseen circumstances cause delays.

The interim final enforcement rule was published on April 17, 2003. It established guidelines for HHS to impose civil money penalties for HIPAA violations. This is the second extension issued for the interim rule.
