The Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) posted two new whitepapers August 25 on the impact of national provider identifiers (NPIs) on providers and others.

The Impact of NPI on Healthcare Providers covers the overall business impact of the adoption and implementation of the new NPIs on healthcare providers. The paper addresses individual and organizational providers and focuses on the specific transactions under which providers will use the identifiers. The paper also provides some basic HIPAA information for understanding the implications of this new rule. As providers adopt new versions of standard transactions, WEDI will update the paper accordingly.

The Impact of NPI on Clearinghouses, PBMs, and Vendors identifies key issues that will impact healthcare clearinghouses, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), and vendors, as the NPI replaces existing identifiers.
