NIST to help identify security vulnerabilities

Before you buy that new software, you may want to check the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Web site. The organization has launched a comprehensive cybersecurity database with the latest information on vulnerabilities in popular products, reports Federal Computer Week (FCW).

The National Vulnerability Database (NVD) integrates all publicly available U.S. government vulnerability resources and provides references to industry resources. The NVD contains about 12,000 vulnerability entries, with about 10 new entries added each day, reports FCW.

The Homeland Security Department's National Cyber Security Division funds the NVD, which is designed to complement the department's suite of vulnerability management offerings. Information is available for free to the public.
