CMS Monday responded to the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange's (WEDI) concerns regarding the National Provider Identifier (NPI), including recommendations on the enumeration system and implementation of the NPI.

For example, WEDI recommended pushing back the deadline for compliance if the enumerator fails to start issuing provider identifiers by May 2005. In response, CMS said it expects the enumerator to begin the process on time and will continually reassess the situation and inform WEDI should a delay occur.

CMS also answered recommendations on the following:

  • Auto-enumeration and bulk enumeration
  • Piloting and testing NPIs
  • Implementation timelines
  • Cross-indexing of NPIs
  • Use of NPI on paper forms and other nonstandard or non-HIPAA transactions
  • Identifiers in addition to the NPI
  • Subpart enumeration
