Unlike many organizations still scrambling to meet the HIPAA security deadline that went into effect last week, Carolinas Hospital System and McLeod Health are already fully compliant, according to the South Carolina paper, the Morning News.
"By evaluating the current processes and procedures against the HIPAA regulations, we were able to improve the security of the information and the data circuits," Marty Parker, chief information officer for Carolinas, told the paper. "This evaluation allowed us the opportunity to streamline some of the old processes and create some new ones, while yet still eliminating others."
The secret to McLeod's success? It already had many tools in place to meet HIPAA requirements long before the security rule deadline. Now both facilities prep to apply for the National Provider Identifiers. No rest for the weary in the world of HIPAA compliance.
