Forty-five percent of hospitals and health systems that responded to an American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) HIPAA-readiness survey reported full compliance with the privacy rule. Ninety-one percent of respondents considered their facilities more than 85% compliant.

The picture for the security rule looks slightly bleaker, with only 17% of facilities reporting full compliance. However, 43% described their facilities as 85%-95% compliant, according to the AHIMA survey.

"The compliance figures are certainly encouraging," said Mervat Abdelhak, PhD, RHIA, president of AHIMA, in a press release. "But the clear message here is that privacy and security are ongoing issues that require continued commitment and fine-tuning, and can't be forgotten beyond initial compliance.

AHIMA released the results of the survey in conjunction with the second annual National Health Information Privacy and Security Week, April 10-16, 2005. Visit AHIMA's Web site for complete survey results.
