The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released last week a special publication detailing how organizations can meet the requirements of the HIPAA security rule.

The paper, titled An Introductory Resource Guide for Implementing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Rule, explains some of the key concepts of HIPAA security including administrative, technical, and physical controls, and general administrative and organizational requirements.

It also provides a crosswalk of HIPAA security to other available NIST publications, as well as to the requirements of the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002, which contains requirements relevant to the security programs of all federal agencies.

Go to the NIST Web site to read a copy of the special publication.
