Only 18% of small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) including healthcare providers and 30% of health plans are ready for the April 20 security deadline, according to new data from the Information Technology Solution Providers Alliance (ITSPA).
ITSPA's Healthcare Advisory Board offered several suggestions for SMBs to comply with HIPAA security, including
- securing computer hardware features on PCs and other access devices that haven't been secured
- locking records and files
- putting safeguards in place
- training employees on HIPAA rules
- asking an IT provider for help
ITSPA also suggested SMBs look at helpful Web sites such as that of the Department of Health and Human Services and organizations such as HIMSS.
