Despite less than two months to go before the HIPAA security deadline, only 18% of providers and 30% of payers are currently compliant, according to a survey conducted by Phoenix Health Systems and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Only 74% of providers and 80% of payers indicated they'll be ready by mid-April.
The survey also revealed the following:
- Seventy-three percent of providers now comply with the transactions and code sets regulations
- Sixteen percent of providers still do not comply with HIPAA privacy regulations
- Integration of new systems, policies, and procedures, and interpretation of HIPAA regulations remain the top roadblocks to HIPAA compliance
Four hundred healthcare industry representatives, including chief information officers, senior managers, and department directors, responded to the survey. Phoenix Health and HIMSS conducted the survey from January 4-20, 2005. Go to HIPAAvisory.com for full survey results.
