Twenty-seven healthcare organizations in Maryland joined to form the Safety Through Electronic Prescribing (STEP) initiative to accelerate the voluntary adoption of electronic prescribing among doctors in the state, according to InformationWeek.
E-prescribing can improve patient safety and communication, and simplify processes for patients, physicians, pharmacies, and insurers. STEP will provide classes, workshops, case studies, and white papers to inform physicians of the benefits of e-prescribing and push toward its adoption.
Members of the alliance include Aetna, Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, Maryland Academy of Family Physicians, Maryland Health Care Commission, Maryland Medical Group Management Association, Kmart, Rite Aid, and Walgreens, among others. This initiative is the first of its kind in the United States.
