HIPAA appears on top 10 list of ways to avoid litigation

Employers who separate medical records and personnel files and refrain from discussing employees' PHI can avoid, reduce the cost of, or increase the likelihood of winning litigation, according to attorney Bill Clifton, who shared his top 10 ways to avoid liability in the Macon Telegraph.

Other suggestions included

  • conducting yearly training for all supervisors and managers on harassment and discrimination
  • implementing a strong workplace safety program that complies with OSHA guidelines
  • publishing an employee handbook that contains company policies and procedures
