During a speech at the Cleveland Clinic on Friday, President Bush demonstrated his support of more widespread use of healthcare information technology (HIT).
He announced plans to ask Congress to allot $50 million more in funding for HIT for fiscal year (FY) 2005 and $125 million for FY 2006. This money will go to demonstration projects that will test the effectiveness of HIT and allow for increased adoption in the healthcare industry, according to a White House press release.
The President also discussed an e-prescribing proposal by CMS that will bring electronic prescriptions to seniors when the drug benefit takes effect in January 2006. The proposed standards address transactions between prescribers and dispensers, eligibility and benefits inquiries, formulary coverage, and comparative pricing. The rule will appear in the Feb. 4, 2005 Federal Register.
