In a presentation to the Subcommittee on Privacy and Confidentiality of the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS), Dr. Richard Seelig, vice president of medical applications for VeriChip Corporation, offered his guarantee that use of VeriChip's radio frequency identification (RFID) tags would not jeopardize patient privacy. He cited the implementation of six privacy points on the technology to back his case.
Others in Seelig's organization support his point. "As a pioneer in RFID applications, we must take a leadership role in proactively addressing privacy," said Michael Krawitz, Applied Digital's chief privacy officer, in a press release. "Hospitals, physicians, and other healthcare providers demand that VeriChip's convenience and usefulness not be compromised by privacy concerns." VeriChip is a subsidiary of Applied Digital.
The NCVHS asked for this presentation to follow through on its duties of advising the Department of Health and Human Services on the administrative simplifications of HIPAA.
