In response to a Request for Information (RFI) issued by the U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONCHIT), 13 health and IT organizations endorsed a national framework that supports improved health information exchange, protects patient privacy, and progresses the United States toward more reliable, quality care.
The collaborative's ideal system provides authorized users with quicker access to patient information, empowers patients to access and control their own information, and fosters more data aggregation for public health, research, and quality assessment, according to the "Collaborative ONCHIT RFI Response." The group does not recommend a centralized national database or a unique national health identifier.
Some of the organizations involved include the American Health Information Management Association, the American Medical Informatics Association, the American National Standards Institute, and Health Level Seven, Inc. Go to Connecting for Health to read the group's collaborative response.
