To address the growing risk associated with medical devices and the transmission and storage of electronic PHI, the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) created the Manufacturer Disclosure Statement for Medical Device Security (MDS 2).

This standardized form allows manufacturers to quickly respond to providers' requests regarding the security of the medical devices they produce. This tool will also help healthcare providers assess their vulnerability and risks in this area and ease their efforts to implement HIPAA-mandated security management processes, according to the HIMSS press release.

The American College of Clinical Engineering, ECRI (formerly the Emergency Care Research Institute), and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association have endorsed the MDS 2. Go to the HIMSS Web site to read the press release or to download the MDS 2 form.
