A security breach of a computer that belonged to a University of California researcher put at risk the personal information of 1.4 million disabled and elderly people who received home care through the university's In Home Supportive Services, reported the Sacramento Bee.

A screening program found the security breach, but investigators still don't know the extent of the break in. "There's no indication that anybody's data has been compromised," Carlos Ramos, assistant secretary of the California Health and Human Service Agency, told the Bee.

As a precaution, state health officials are urging people concerned about their records to get a credit check. Go to the HHS Web site or call 866/404-9214 for more information on this process.
