Q: What security tools or items should be included in an incident response toolkit?
A: Your incident response toolkit must consist of several essential items. If your incident-response plan calls for bringing in an external incident-response expert, make sure he or she has the following items:
- Call list for incident-response team members
- Digital recorder or notepad and pen to take notes
- Digital camera
- Software CD-ROMs and diskettes for critical applications that may need to be reinstalled
- Disk imaging tools to create an image of the hard drive of the victim system before analysis
- Forensics analysis tools for searching for evidence on disk drives
- Network diagrams and other documentation such as firewall rule sets and critical password lists
