Nine healthcare IT solution providers including Allscripts Healthcare Solutions and the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs announced the formation of a new alliance to speed up the transition to e-prescribing.

The group, Cafe Rx, will attempt to accelerate the transition process by doing the following, according to HIPAAdvisory from Phoenix Health Systems:

  • Offer strategies and models to payers and physicians
  • Provide information on e-prescribing on its new Web site, www.caferx.org
  • Educate physicians and staff on the value and importance of making this transition
  • Back lobbying efforts that support e-prescribing

Medication errors account for 7,000 deaths annually, reports HIPAAdvisory. Approximately $80 billion a year is spent treating adverse drug events. Cafe Rx aims to decrease these numbers, save money, and increase patient and physician satisfaction.
