Insurance companies that included security provisions in their HIPAA preparation for the privacy rule are ahead of schedule for the April 2005 security deadline. However, the number of companies to actually do so remains minimal, according to Insurance & Technology.
The Ohio insurance company Medical Mutual paired its privacy and security efforts. The company validated its security against the 2002 HIPAA security notice of proposed rule making and the 2003 final rule, reports I&T.
But most insurance companies did not prepare as Medical Mutual did. A study by the nonprofit organization URAC reveals organizations may have trouble complying with the HIPAA security rule due to incomplete or inappropriate risk analysis and risk management, limited information systems review, or inefficient reporting and handling of security problems.
URAC based its results on interviews with 300 healthcare industry companies, including nearly 70 payers. Go to URAC's Web site for more information on the report.
