Before the judge had a chance to make a ruling, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) backed down on its request for access to the medical records of women who received controversial late-term abortion procedures, CNN.com reported April 27.

The DOJ hoped to use the records in an attempt to defend its ban on the procedures that opponents call "partial-birth abortions," said CNN.

The government withdrew its request to expedite the case against the ban, reports CNN. Officials at the Manhattan hospital where the record-request was made, are relieved that the privacy of their patients is intact, the news outlet says.
