1. Tip from an alert reader
HIPAA Weekly Advisor reader Kathy Zeitz, corporate compliance officer of Methodist Health System in Omaha, NE, wrote our editors last week with a tip for complying with HIPAA's requirement to allow patients to opt-out of directories.
"Tell patients who do not want to be included in a directory to notify family members of their room numbers and explain that they will not be told any information if they ask for him or her at the information desk."
This will reduce the number of queries at the information desk for patients who opt-out, says Zeitz. It will also ensure that those individuals the patient chooses to hear from are allowed access.
