Question: I have a room at home where I used to perform medical billing. The room is not accessible to any of my family members without permission. If my office manager or administrator consents to my bringing patient charts home for billing, is this okay?

Answer: There's nothing in HIPAA to prohibit this, but taking PHI out of the office increases risk. You should be sure there are procedures and guidelines in writing to cover billing from home. These documents should include not only the home area, as the biller recognizes, but also how the information is transported back and forth. Finally, will you do your billing on paper or on a computer? If the latter, your standard operating procedure should cover that, too.
