CMS introduces national provider ID

CMS last week unveiled a new system of identification that will let providers use the same provider number regardless of how many health plans they bill. The move will generate significant savings on administrative costs for health care organizations whether or not they are HIPAA covered entities, the agency said. All covered entities must obtain a new national provider identifier.

The rule does not take effect until May 23, 2005, when providers can apply for their new ID. CMS published the rule on Friday, January 23. You can download it at http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fedreg/a040123c.html
