3. Survey analyzes TCS compliance delays
Covered entities had good reasons for requesting an extension on complying with HIPAAs transactions and code sets (TCS) standards, according to a new government survey. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) gave regulated organizations an extra year past the October 16, 2002 implementation deadline to make transactions and use codes that meet HIPAA standards.
Two-thirds of survey respondents said they needed the extension because they needed more implementation time, while some said they were waiting on their vendors (47%) or clearinghouses (33%) to achieve compliance first. Some respondents said they needed more information on standards or more testing time. Just under half of the 549,000 covered entities that answered the CMS survey said they hadnt done any of the three TCS implementation phases (awareness, operational, and testing).
More than 90% of respondents were providers, and nearly half of those providers were doctors offices. To read the survey, go to http://ncvhs.hhs.gov/031014lt.pdf
