Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans will continue to accept noncompliant transactions after HIPAA's October 16 transactions and code sets compliance date, according to Karen Trudel, deputy director of CMS' Office of HIPAA Standards.

Trudel discussed the use of contingency plans by health plans, as well as Medicare's recent decision to accept noncompliant transactions after October 16, during the Thirteenth National HIPAA Implementation Roundtable on September 25.

More than 2,000 people participated in the call, which took place 21 days before the October 16 deadline. Trudel and others stressed that the use of contingency plans by Medicare and health plans should only be a temporary measure.

Look for the upcoming November 2003 issue of Briefings on HIPAA for more information from the September 25 roundtable.
