Ninety-four percent of Medicare Part B providers expect to be in compliance with HIPAA's transactions and code sets standards by the October 16 compliance date, according to a recent report from the Office of Inspector General.

The report, "HIPAA Readiness: Administrative Simplification for Medicare Part B Providers," is based on the results of a mail survey sent to a random group of Medicare Part B providers that submitted claims to Medicare carriers between July 1, 2001, and June 30, 2002. Providers, including physicians, durable medical equipment suppliers, and independently practicing therapists, received surveys between December 2, 2002, and April 4, 2003. 128 responded.

Other results of the survey include the following:

  • 90% of providers said they either have or intend to develop testing strategies that include internal and external data interfaces
  • Approximately half are developing contingency plans in the event their system is not in compliance by October
  • 47% said vendors and trading partners could affect their ability to meet the compliance deadline
