In another attempt to provide more privacy rule guidance for organizations, the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) National Institute of Health on April 17 published a new volume on the rule's impact on research.

The guidance, "Protecting Personal Health Information in Research: Understanding the HIPAA Privacy Rule," covers how the privacy regulations will affect research and what researchers need to know about the requirements.

HHS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also released a guidance on April 11 that outlines the privacy rule's impact on public health. The document covers the requirements for disclosures of PHI made for public health purposes and other related topics.
