HIPAA privacy and security officers can build a culture of compliance by having privacy and security at the forefront of what their organization does.
Give your team members the time and budgets they need to keep their policies and procedures current. Purchase and utilize effective technical security controls to secure your environment. Complete regular security risk analyses, mitigate identified risks, and implement an ongoing training program that includes providing reminders throughout the year, Holly Schlenvogt, MSH, CPM, executive vice president of nonprofit, Wisconsin-based HIPAA Collaborative of Wisconsin (HIPAA COW), a group that provides educational and training material and hosts two industry conferences geared toward HIPAA compliance, adds.
In addition, keep on top of OCR rules. Verify that your policies, procedures, and controls reflect the final Omnibus Rule (2013), Schlenvogt says. HHS posts privacy and security guidance and updates on a regular basis and plans to post more this year and early next year.
