Tip: Follow these tips for choosing encryption software

Encryption should be part of a larger layered security infrastructure that includes firewalls, anti-virus software, user authentication, and appropriate access controls, says Kevin Beaver, CISSP, president of Principle Logic, LLC, in Atlanta. When looking at your options, consider the following types of data:
- data in transit, which includes any PHI that goes across an open network
- data at rest, which includes any PHI in a database on a server
