A hacker gained access to 7,000 patient files at Indiana University's Center for Sleep Disorders in late November after new software was installed, according to the Indianapolis Star.
Indiana University School of Medicine officials discovered the break-in January 3 and sent letters to patients February 12, warning them to keep a close eye on their financial affairs.
The hacker gained access to the information, which included names, Social Security numbers, home addresses, and dates of birth, using an automated probe.
The incident is the third breach of Indiana University's cyber systems in more than two years, reports the Star.
