Pay-per-view: Overhauled 2015 CPT drug test codes bring changes for coders and providers

In an effort to accommodate the latest advances in technology and make the code set easier to modify for future technological changes, the AMA extensively overhauled codes for reporting drug testing in the 2015 CPT® Manual.
 
Drug reporting procedures are now separated into three subsections: therapeutic drug assay, drug assay, and chemistry.
 
The drug assay subsection is further divided into two major categories:
  • Presumptive drug class procedures are used to identify the possible use of a drug or drug class.
  • Definitive drug class procedures are used to identify possible use of a drug or drug class. These tests identify the specific drugs and associated metabolites, if performed.
