Last week’s question
March 15, the Ides of March, is known as the date Julius Caesar was assassinated. What did the Ides signify for Romans each month?
a. A full moon
b. A religious holiday
c. The day for tax collections
d. The middle of the month
The answer is A. Romans did not have a number for each day of the month, instead counting back from three points each month: the nones (fifth or seventh day of the month), ides (13th or 15th), and kalends (first of the following month). The ides generally occurred on the 13th day of the month, but fell on the 15th for most months with 31 days. It was meant to occur near the full moon each month.
