Tips from the March issue of Briefings on HIPAA:
- As health information technology (HIT) brings innovations to the healthcare landscape, organizations must decide whether to continue trying to manage their own information technology infrastructure or embrace innovation and work with HIT organizations to help manage data.
- Rather than resisting technology, organizations should look for a means to leverage it in the most secure way possible.
- Develop a standard process for assessing vendor risks through a series of questions, such as those included on the Security Assessment Form developed by the Health Care Cloud Coalition.
- Check up on HIT vendors regularly to ensure they are keeping up to date with security standards. Although a security assessment form may help an organization decide whether to use an HIT vendor, asking the vendor to complete the form on a quarterly basis is not uncommon.
- Do not assume that all claims of HIPAA compliance from HIT companies are true. Too often, companies stress that their solution is HIPAA-compliant but cannot back up that claim.
