CDI specialists are in high demand, and finding experienced staff can be difficult. That often means hiring talented but untrained nurses or coders and developing a training program to get them up to speed. ACDIS developed a number of tools to help get new CDI staff off on the right foot.
The Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist’s Complete Training Guideby Laurie L. Prescott, MSN, RN, CCDS, CDIP, CDI Boot Camp instructor, offers sample training timelines, explains basic tenets of CDI, offers test-your-knowledge questions, games, and quizzes, and provides recommended activities for mentoring and support.
Augment onboarding efforts with the CDI Essential Skills Online Learning Library, which offers modules on conducting the health record review, core concepts and skills, introduction to the query process, and documentation improvement opportunities. This interactive program offers session tracking, test-your-knowledge questions, and module quizzes to ensure concepts are fully comprehended by new staff members.
The CDI Boot Camp online or onsite versions offer an even more in-depth examination of the core skills for CDI professionals. Once new CDI employee have obtained a basic awareness of key concepts, this intensive course provides case examples, applied lessons, classroom experience, and instructor assistance to clear up any lingering confusion, and to open conceptual doors for new staff.
