CMS announced January 29 that it intends to release a rule this spring to modify 2015 Meaningful Use requirements. The changes are intended to reduce reporting burdens while supporting the goals of the program, according to CMS.

The new rule would respond to provider concerns on topics such as software implementation and information exchange readiness. Proposals that CMS will consider when drafting the new rule include:
  • Realigning hospital EHR reporting periods to the calendar year, which should allow eligible hospitals additional time to incorporate 2014 Edition software into workflows and better align it with other CMS programs
  • Modifying other aspects of the program to match long-term goals, reduce complexity, and lessen reporting burdens
  • Shorten the 2015 EHR reporting period to 90 days

The rule anticipated to be released this spring would be separate from the Stage 3 Meaningful Use proposed rule that CMS is expected to release in March.
